I Promise I Shall Not Play Billiards

Tightlaced Theatre presents Edinburgh playwright Fiona McDonald’s award-nominated play. It’s 1857. Madeleine Smith has just stood trial for her life, accused of poisoning her lover. Given the uniquely Scottish verdict of Not Proven, she is free from prison, but not from suspicion. Madeleine’s public and private personae gather to tell their stories, leaving the audience to reach their own conclusions about her innocence or guilt.

Hyde & Seek
New venue & time! 20:50 (21:50) @ C, Chambers Street

15 years after his Fringe First nominated play Ultimate Islands, ‘beautifully written, sensitive and intelligent’ (Scotsman), Michael Daviot revisits Robert Louis Stevenson. Inspired by a childhood nightmare caused by Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, this show is part biography, part autobiography. For 50 years Stevenson and his work have woven through Michael's life in good times and bad; he uses this story to intimately and unflinchingly explore family, memory, identity, addiction, mental health and the many faces of Mr Hyde. Warning: contains live fiddle-playing. Teamed with Peppermint Muse's Altamont and Lavender Junction.

La Niña Barro
Show cancelled (performer needed back home)

Nothing more natural than clay and water to give shape to woman and understand that her, like Earth, was once young and brave, strong and unbreakable, old and tired, weak and broken. And able to give herself and others life, meaning, flesh and self-awareness. Nothing links better these ideas than movement, embodied in Elizabeth Sogorb's dancing and interpretation to Ale Rodes' mbira compositions. Directed by Flavia D'Avila, and based on the poems of Marta Massé, this is the stage version of the link between everything that we basically are and what we could be. [Free, non-ticketed]

First Class

Three lives, three choices, three trains. As seemingly unconnected people commute to Manchester Piccadilly for their own reasons, hidden stories of loss, guilt and devotion are firmly exposed and unveiled. Lydia, the destitute mother, Jack, a stress-ridden schoolteacher and Rachel, a struggling sportswoman are all on-board, each dwelling on the choices that led them down these tracks. Yet it soon becomes clear that their journeys are not as innocuous as they first seem. First Class is a new piece of writing by Edinburgh playwright James Beagon (Four Walls, **** ThreeWeeks, Edinburgh Fringe 2013). [Free, non-ticketed]

Blackout

My first drink seemed to unlock something. I threw up, went home, woke up with a stinking hangover the next morning and thought, ‘that was fantastic, when are we doing it again?’ Blackout debuted at The Arches in Glasgow in 2013. It is an honest insight into drinking and recovery, made entirely from interviews with recovering alcoholics, including the writer. ‘Blackout is a great piece of work because it is both entertaining and important’ (Rob Drummond, award-winning playwright). 'Full of raw impact, hard-hitting and completely hilarious in parts' (Jamie, contributor).
