Discover Fine Acting News

Naturally, I'm very excited about my Shakespeare workshop for Raw Talent Productions this weekend (18th and 19th April).  Their site has an online booking system, or you can contact them via info@rawtalentproductions.co.uk or 0131 220 8304 - if interested, get cracking!

Be sure to check out ILA funding which can completely cover some Raw Talent classes - the sooner you do this, the sooner the funds will be available: do not delay!

And - you read it here first - the next DF Acting Course is to be a General Acting Course.  Each week we will explore a technique / method and build up characters and a scene, adding depth with each new aspect.  Let me know if you are interested!

As always, read on for further news and events, and remember,  whatever you are up to - ENJOY!

Danielle Farrow

Shakespeare Workshop: Taste Those Words! - Danielle Farrow at Raw Talent Productions
Shakespeare's stories and characters are rightly popular to this day.  It is his language, though, that both attracts in its rich beauty and repels when seen as complex and hard to grasp.

This workshop looks at meaning, verse and practical expression, and builds up techniques for tackling Shakespearean language.  Come, 'feast your ears' and tongues!

Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th April, 11am to 5pm.  This is one of the workshops I am leading as part of Raw Talent Productions' 2009 ProgrammeUnable to make this?  See May What's On for a different Shakespeare workshop.

And just because I really want you to have enough information to make the choices that are right for you, below are two other workshops that actually clash with mine!  Don't say I'm not good to you. :)

Alexander Technique - Sandra Riddell at Tightlaced New Talent
Keeping muscles relaxed and movement free, Alexander Technique is something most actors learn at some point. This workshop will suit those who would like to refresh the basics or anyone who has never tried Alexander Technique before and wants to increase their awareness of their own body and keep their muscles happy.

Places on this workshop are strictly limited, so please book early to avoid disappointment!

Saturday 18th April, 10.30am to 3.30pm, Eric Liddell Centre, cost £40. Contact jennifermcgregor@gmail.com to book, with further details available at www.tightlacedtheatre.org.

Postgrad Course: The Form of Duologue in Shakespeare - Charioteer Theatre
This course for experienced actors and postgrads is designed to help the actor to get acquainted with the structure of the Shakespearian language and speech, engage with the set of circumstances presented by a specific scene and create the energy to support the performance in a duologue. [Just found out I will be playing Iago for this - looks great!]

Saturday 18th to Friday 24th April, 2pm to 7pm.  Details available at DF Acting Information.

Play Day Workshop - Royal Lyceum Theatre
A drama workshop using costumes and props from the Lyceum store to create character and a Play in a Day. Using improvisation and devising techniques. Age 16 years +

Saturday 25th April, 10.30am to 4pm     Cost: £10 / £5 from Lyceum Box Office     Tel: 0131 248 4848

For more information about this season's workshops or performances, including booking, call 0131 248 4848 or visit www.lyceum.org.uk.

Authenticity & the Actor: What Makes Me Unique? - Morna Burdon at Raw Talent Productions
This workshop is aimed at actors and performers who are keen to explore, re-visit, liberate their potential as creative artists.

The work is emotional, dynamic, funny, serious, challenging, changing and is based on the work of Master Fool, Jonothan Kay, where the work centres on the techniques of fooling, confronting the dictator within, and authentic expression through creative impulse.

Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th April, 11am to 5pm; part of Raw Talent Productions' 2009 Programme - further information can be found at this site and the workshop is eligible for ILA funding.

Meisner Workshop - Scott Williams

The famous Meisner Technique as it is taught at the Neighborhood Playhouse in New York, whose alumni include Robert Duval, Sidney Pollack and David Mamet. • Scott studied with Sanford Meisner at the Neighbourhood Playhouse. He is founder of the Impulse Company, which works with actors, writers and directors to create vibrant and dynamic theatre.

PARTICIPANTS: £250
OBSERVERS: £50

Equity
The East of Scotland Equity Branch holds regular meetings and social evenings, and if you would like to know more, please contact edinburgh@equity.org.uk.  The next meeting is on Monday 20th April and is a social event open to non-members - come along and have fun checking us out!

Protecting Actors

Protecting Actors has been setup to address the fact that many production companies promise participants a DVD copy of the film, but fail to deliver this in a timely fashion, if at all.  See DF Acting Information for further information, and help to spread the word!

Great News from Siege Perilous at The GRV
(see News Page Issue 2)
"We sold out on opening night and had 80% occupancy across the four nights. The Scotsman came to review and everyone who responded in the survey said they would attend future shows.

As a result of this encouraging start, The GRV is making a further commitment to live theatre by moving shows to a wonderful upstairs space called 'The Cube' and investing in the installation of brand new seating.

As a result of the move to The Cube and all the work that is being carried out, the next show will now be Tuesday 19-Sunday 24 May. The start time of theatre shows will remain as 8pm with a 15-minute interval. This will be another double bill of new writing."

DF Acting News Page will bring you further details of the next show, of course, and you can also find out more at Siege Perilous' website.

Thoughts of Interest

"Remember that you are an actor in a play, and that the playwright chooses the manner of it: if he wants you to act a poor man you must act the part with all your powers; and so if your part be a cripple or a magistrate or a plain man. For your business is to act the character that is given you and act it well. The choice of the cast is another's." - Epictetus, a Greek Stoic philosopher whose writings influenced David Mamet and William H Macy when they developed the Practical Aesthetics acting technique.  I guess casting was an issue even back in the 1st century!

Regarding techniques, I often hear about the 7 'W's of acting - I've had to do a wee bit of research, though, to find out what exactly is being referred to here, rather than just trying for educated guesses. To those of you who already know: great, and I hope you enjoy the reminder.  To everyone else, yes it does seem fairly obvious once mentioned, but mentioning is certainly worth it! So, here is what I now understand of the 7 'W's.

Unsurprisingly, 'why' is one of the 7 - and here is a topical 'why': Why, at Easter, are eggs delivered by a bunny? Well, it seems traditionally it was probably a hare, and there are various suggested explanations.

Connected to a different annual festival, I've had a letter from Father Christmas.  "What?" you cry (another of those 7 'W's), "It's only Easter and she's mentioning Christmas!?!"  Well, check out this offer from Santa, and you'll understand why he is asking you to consider him so early in the year.

And that's it for another month!  As ever, if you want something included in the next newsletter, email d.f.acting@gmail.com making this request - and feel free to pass the News Page on to anyone who might be interested.

Until next time, then, and remember:

ENJOY!
